How To
How to replace a broken window
It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.
Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame
First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.
Second step: Clean the new glass
You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.
Step 3: Install the new glass
Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.
Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.
Fifth step: Seal the repaired area
After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.
Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
